Estimated future population of Japan

Japan's total population, which was 126,150,000 people in 2020, is expected to decrease to 87,000,000 people by 2070, with the aging population rate projected to rise from 28.6% to 38.7%. On the other hand, the proportion of the population aged 15-64 will decrease from 59.5% to 52.1%. The elderly dependency ratio (the ratio of the population aged 65 and above to the population aged 15-64) is expected to increase from 48.0 in 2020 to 74.2 in 2070. This means that the situation will shift from having 2.1 working-age individuals supporting one older person to having 1.3 individuals supporting one older person. It is necessary to promote healthy aging and establish systems that enable independent living even as people age.
